Gut-Directed Hypnotherapy
Gut-directed hypnotherapy is the single most evidence-supported psychological treatment for IBS — and one of the least available. The Brain-Gut Health Centre delivers it virtually across Manitoba.
What it is
Gut-directed hypnotherapy is a structured medical treatment — not stage hypnosis. Over a course of sessions, a trained GI psychotherapist guides you into a focused, relaxed state and uses targeted suggestion and imagery aimed specifically at gut function: normalizing motility, reducing visceral pain signalling, and calming the gut's stress response. Protocols are standardized and were developed in academic gastroenterology centres.
The evidence
Across randomized controlled trials, gut-directed hypnotherapy improves IBS symptoms in more than 70% of patients who complete treatment, with studies showing benefits maintained for years afterward. It improves pain, bloating, bowel habit and quality of life, and is endorsed in major gastroenterology guidelines as a recommended therapy for IBS. Evidence also supports its use in functional dyspepsia and functional heartburn.
What a course of treatment involves
Treatment typically runs as a structured program of weekly virtual sessions, supplemented by audio practice between sessions. Most patients notice change within the first half of the program, and validated symptom scores are tracked throughout so progress is measured, not assumed.
Who it's for
Adults with IBS, functional dyspepsia, functional heartburn or other disorders of brain-gut interaction — especially those whose investigations are normal but whose symptoms persist despite diet and medication. No prior experience with hypnosis or therapy is needed.
